As I mentioned in my last post, I want to talk about gynecomastia surgery and answer some of the more frequently asked questions relating to it.
For those who have large man breasts, surgery will many times be your only resort. You may have tried all of the other tips and nothing has remotely even come close to working. With that said though, be sure you truly have exhausted all other efforts before deciding on surgery. It should be your last option. OK...here are some of the most common questions people have in deciding on gynecomastia surgery.
Q: Does my health insurance cover this type of surgery?
A: Most likely...no it will not. It would be a very rare case for any health insurer to cover the cost of gynecomastia surgery. Insurance companies consider this procedure a cosmetic surgery and refuse payment.
Q: How much does man breast reduction surgery usually cost?
A: As a good rule of thumb you can expect to pay $3,000 - $7,000 in most cases. It all depends on where you live, the hospital, etc.
Q: Is there a minimum age in having the procedure?
A: While there is no hard fast rule here you expect most doctors to require patients to be over the age of 18. There are several reasons for that including the fact that gynecomastia in teenagers will often disappear on its own in their 20's. On the flip side, there really is no set age limit on when this type of procedure can be performed either. There are cases of men in their 70's having surgery to cure gynecomastia.
Q: Will the surgery leave me with any scars?
A: As with any type of surgery there is always going to be at least a little bit of scarring. The good news is that with today's medical procedures it is almost not even noticeable. And as time goes by the scars eventually fade away.
Q: How long will it take before I am back to normal again?
A: The recovery time with gynecomastia surgery is only 7-10 days in most all cases. You can generally go back to work unless your job requires you to lift heavy objects. If so then you may be looking at 4-6 weeks before being able to work. Although that may seem like a downer you sure don't want to overdo it and do additional damage that would cause you to have to go back to the hospital.
